The prime purpose or object of SEOM is to encourage study and research into neoplastic disease and procure the official approval of clinical and therapeutic criteria in its diagnosis and treatment, which it sets out to achieve by:
- Promoting the development of suitable therapeutic means through research at all levels: basic, experimental and clinical.
- Procuring the coordination of these means on a harmonious and complementary basis.
- Fomenting uniformity of criteria for the treatment of cancer in its diverse localizations and extents.
The National Oncological Research Centre (CNIO) was set up in 1998 by the Carlos III Health Institute, under the aegis of the Ministry of Health. CNIO is managed by a foundation, established at the same time as the Centre, which is called the Carlos III National Oncological Research Centre.
The basic aim of CNIO is to carry out high-quality research and endow the National Health System with innovative technology in the field of cancer.
International
As a non-profit organization, ASCO has been engaged ever since 1964 in supporting all types of cancer research, but especially patient-oriented clinical research. The function of ASCO is based on four main pillars: facilitating the provision of high-quality clinical care; promoting the exchange of information and ideas relating to cancer, including biology, diagnosis, technology, treatment and the psychosocial impact of cancer; assisting the training of all people in clinical research and the overall care of cancer patients; and fomenting optimal communication between the different branches involved in the study and treatment of cancer.
The EORTC Gynaecological Cancer Group has increased its collaboration substantially with a number of other groups, amongst which we may mention the following: EORTC Clinical Trial Group, NCIC-Canada, Scottish Gynaecological Cancer Group, Nordic Society of Gynaecological Cancer (NSGO), Medical Research Council (MRC, UK), Gynaecological Oncology Group (GOG-US), Arbeitsgemeinschaft fûr Gynekologische Onkologie (AGO - Germany). Representatives from each group usually attend the meetings and this is reciprocal whenever possible.
In addition, the EORTC-GCG is one of the founding members of the Gynaecological Cancer Intergroup. In this group the majority of multicentric groups studying gynaecological cancer are represented and meet twice a year.
The Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup (GCIG) is an organization in which the representatives of the different international and national research groups conducting clinical gynaecological cancer trials take part.
