PRESENTATION AND HISTORY

The Spanish Ovarian Cancer Group (GEICO) was created in 1999 as a non-profit Scientific Association with the purpose of carrying out two main objectives:

1. Develop, promote and coordinate clinical trials in gynaecological cancers in general, with a special focus on ovarian cancer.
2. Organize scientific meetings, congresses and symposiums with the objective of educating and promoting GEICO studies.

More than 30 oncologists are currently part of the GEICO group. They are based in different hospitals around the country and are experts in onco-gynaecological diseases.

Since its foundation, one of the key objectives of the GEICO Group has been to promote the participation of as many Spanish centres as possible in scientific international clinical studies. To reach this objective, the GEICO group joined with the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup (GCIG), to participate in collaboration with other Worldwide Cooperative Groups involved in the investigation of gynaecological cancers. As a result of this collaboration with the GCIG, the GEICO Group actively participates in several randomized first line studies for the treatment of ovarian cancer, which appear on this page in the CLINICAL TRIALS section. Likewise, the GEICO group is active in the design and promotion of new clinical studies under the auspices of the GCIG.

In addition, the GEICO Group promotes clinical studies in onco-gynaecological diseases. These clinical studies are performed by GEICO members, who are responsible for the design, coordination and implementation. In this way, support is provided to the clinical research initiatives that arise amongst the members of the Group, which represents one of our firmest commitments.

Another important objective is the promotion and development of scientific meetings on Gynaecological Oncology. Every two years the group organizes an International Symposium entitled “Advanced Ovarian Cancer: Optimal Therapy Update.” The fifth edition of this meeting took place this year. The high level of the international speakers participating in this meeting and the relevance of the programme have made this symposium an educational reference for ovarian cancer in Spain, and one of the main discussion forums in Europe; participation of oncologists from USA, Canada and Australia is increasing with each edition of this symposium.

This web page has been created with the aim of allowing the community and health care professionals involved in the care of patients with gynaecological cancer to get to know the work performed by the GEICO group.
